My laptop computer does not seem to recognise my external hard drive. What should I do?

I connected my external hard drive to my laptop computer, but the laptop does not seem to recognise it. But when I connect it to another computer, it is recognised. I believe the problem is with my laptop computer. What should I do?

If the USB where you are plugging the external drive is working with other devices such as mouse, webcam etc then it could be a problem either in the drive enclosure or a driver (if OS is Windows 9x/Me) or kinda like a restriction on the mass storage drivers (you need a registry hack and file ownership on this problem – common in corporate environment).

Some drive enclosure requires two usb ports to work properly so check that out too.

When you plug it in your USB port see if you can feel the drive spinning up (it will vibrate). If your ext. drive is powered by the USB only (does not have a power brick), your computer may not output enough power through the USB.

The previous answer could apply as well (permission restrictions).

It is also possible that your computer does not properly assign a drive letter to the external drive especially if you run Windows XP. To verify the computer sees the drive (it may see it but not show it in my computer), right click on My Computer and select Manage from the context menu. Then on the left side go to Storage > Disk Management. See if the device is visible there. If it is, then right click and select Change drive letter and put it on some other letter.

Good luck!

laptop buying guide.Do not understand how a laptop computer operates without a telephone line hookup. What do I need, and how much does it cost?

You just need a broadband and a wireless router. All laptops today have built in wireless network.

A wireless router is about 60 dollars, of course you can go higher if you want a better one.

Well if you want a wired connection, all you need is a networking card [in your laptop] Look for a RECTANGLE shaped port [its slightly longer than a phone plug-in] and then all you need to do is go buy an ethernet cord. Either CAT5 or CAT6. You can find this at wal-mart usually on the opposite side of the printer isle.

If you mean wireless, then you’re using a wifi signal, which means you’re connecting through the air using signal rather than using physical cable. In this case, you’ll need a network card that supports wireless [in your laptop] and you’ll need a wireless router. basicly its

Computer > networking card > WiFi signal > WiFi router > ethernet cable > modem > cable to ISP [internet service provider]

time to ditch the dial up and move to high speed.

By your question, I assume you are operating on Dial-Up. While many laptops still offer dial-up modems, the technology has gone the way of the dodo bird. If it is offered in your area, DSL and cable prices have gone significantly down and I would recommend moving to that.

As for your question, once you have DSL or cable, you will have a DSL/Cable modem. This will have an ethernet port, which is wider than a regular phone port. Using Cat5E cable, you can either directly connect the modem to your computer’s ethernet jack or a router’s ethernet jack. A wireless router will allow your computer to connect wirelessly.
