GoPro to replace Nikon as NASA camera supplier

Many thanks to reduced excess weight and modest dimension GoPro cameras will be component of the following NASA manned room flight, potentially to Mars.

NASA have a poor monitor report for cameras. Curiosity for instance isn’t capable of video clip and has just a 2MP CCD digicam.

For the following Rover and other space missions NASA are established to use custom made engineered 4K Go Professional cameras to give us crisp martian landscapes at a higher shindy gentle guiding backing 18 014 bitrate.

Insiders say NASA was close to selecting the Nikon D800 as the mast-digicam on the up coming rover but the complete frame sensor set it at a downside for telephoto photographs and the zooms are a bit chunky.

The GoPro model NASA have selected is a customised edition with interchangeable lens mount and 4K at up to 60fps. NASA will be “sending a number of smaller sized lenses up there as well” but it is not known which. Numerous Canon FD lenses are identified to be in a position to face up to the high amounts of cosmic radiation existing in outer room.

Questioned who would be ‘changing lenses in outer space’, NASA mentioned a camera operator would be sent up. NASA are said to have enlisted Zacuto for technical support and it is confirmed Steve Weiss will be likely up ‘with the camera’ as operator.

Lead engineer Bob Billworth also had some great information for Panasonic fans, declaring the GH2 would be onboard NASA’s following Mars rover (provisionally dubbed ‘Lumax’) to seize video clip. Billworth confirms it will indeed be a hacked GH2. Vitaliy Kiselev, lately recruited by the Russian Federal Area Company as a digital camera firmware programmer experienced this to say about the information his hack would soon be in outer room:

“I am displeased. It is a conspiracy by the Americans to use my hack as propaganda for interspace colonialism disguised as ‘science’”

When challenged by journalists what would take place if the hacked firmware essential a battery pull in outer area, NASA replied that by way of digital camera operator Steve Weiss they would have a remote way of resetting the firmware and restarting the digicam in the function it crashes. Crashes on the present rover Curiosity are common and imagined to be caused by regular gamma ray bursts from Planet 5D.

Requested why they were not sending the newer Panasonic GH3 into space, NASA officers replied that a lot of kinds of martian rock formations can cause moire and aliasing on that design.

Questioned why they were not sending the Canon 7D into place, NASA replied that they would enjoy to catapult a bunch of 7Ds from the earth and ship them hurtling into a dim oblivion but countered that the Cinema EOS variety experienced completed that anyway.

Asked immediately later on why they hated Canon so a lot, NASA replied that they are “more of a Nikon guy” and that the 360 diploma method dial on the 700D did not tempt them again and that the small dimension of the GoPro manufactured much more feeling if travelling 78 million kilometres. In assessments with astronauts NASA identified they favored to shoot 1080/60p on the GH3 and lenses like the Olympus 75mm F1.eight had been wonderful at capturing asteroids in gradual-movement.
